Board Of Managers The Board of Stratheona Home Training Hostel met at Pleasant Point There were present Mesdames H. B. S. Johnstone (in the chair), J. McLeod (organising secretary), E. S. Andrews, C. C Douglas, B. E. Evans, M. Guild, T. W. Satterthwaite, S. Unwin and Miss Austin.
The farm committee reported on work done and to be done. A number’ of applications for trainees were received. During last month one girl had gone to a position in a country home, two new trainees had come into residence, and at the meeting three more were accepted for training. Other applications for entrance are under consideration. Gifts of money and goods were acknowledged from board members and friends (one from as far away as Wellington), and from Esk Valley, Hunter, Morven, Peel Forest Sherwood Downs and Skipton Women’s Institutes and Temuka W.D.F.U. The matron reported that there had been several visitors staying in the hostel since the school broke up in December, but all had now left. Many families camping by the river had been supplied with milk, cakes, etc., while two others had been provided daily with mid-day dinner. Gooseberries, raspberries, black and red currants and plums had been made into jam and bottled. The garden had done well and there were plenty of winter vegetables coming on. The girls were all in good health and had enjoyed the holiday season with picnics, swimming, fishing expeditions and trips to town. Mrs McLeod had paid her usual visits and had given instruction in making tea dishes and cakes, and in the theory of cooking. The poultry had done well and several dozen pullets and some ducklings had been raised. Some of the old girls had visited the hostel, while many others had sent Christmas cards.
