COMMERCIAL ADDINGTON MARKET
STORE LAMBS IN DEMAND (N.Z.P.A.) CHRISTCHURCH, Jan. 31. While the store sheep yarding increased considerably at Addington market to-day, the fat sheep entry remained steady, and in other sections there tended to be an decrease. The entry in the store sheep section totalled 12,030. The large yarding of lambs attracted buyers from all parts of the province and a sound sale was recorded. The highest price of the day was 26/6 for ewe lambs and 25/9 for wether lambs. A pen of soundmouth breeding ewes in forward condition made 23/- and two-tooth wethers 27/9.
The yarding of fat sheep was about 4000 and was comprised mainly of ewes. Wethers were in limited supply, and any pens of sound sheep were eagerly sought after by the trade, which also showed keener interest in young handy-weight ewes. There was increased activity by freezing buyers for aged ewes, most of which sold at between 17/- and 29/-. The highest price for wethers was 43/1, a draft of 60 two-tooths making from 35/6 to that figure. Best two-tooth ewes made up to 33/7, and four and six-tooth maiden ewes up to 30/7. Butchers and other buyers of fat cattle had apparently made good provision for their needs in case of an interruption in the railway services and the entry dropped to-day to 519. The entry exceeded the demand and prices all round dropped by 20/- a head. At the outset prime heifers and young steers almost maintained last week's values, but once a few orders had been filled the market quickly slipped by 20/- a head and did not firm. Best medium weight steer beef made 41/- to 42 6, good to 40/-, and ordinary to 37/6 per 1001 b. Extra prime steers made £l9 to £2O/17/6, prime 516/5/- to £lB/2/6, prime mediumweight £l5 to £l6, ordinary £l2 to £l4/10/-, extra prime hejfers to £l6/7/6, prime £l2 to £l4/2/6. medium £lO to £ll/15/-, extra prime cows to £l4/7/6, prime £B/17/6 to £lO/10/-, medium £7/10/- to £B/5/-, light to £6. Entries in the porker section were smaller than last week and competition was keen. Choppers were in smaller numbers and the sale was the best for several weeks. The entry of baconers was also much smaller and values were better by 3/- to 5/- a head. Values were:—Light porkers 52/6 to 69 6. medium £3/2/6 to £3/9/6. heavy £3/14/6 to £4/15/6. choppers £6/18/6 to £ll/1/-, light baconers £4/9/6 to £4/19/6. medium £5/3/6 to £5/8/6, heavy £5/12/6 to £5/18/6, extra heavy £5/19/6 to £6/12/6. The average price per lb was 9d to 91d.
