BIG JAPANESE ARMY
General Stilwell’s Prediction
(7.30 p.m.) WASHINGTON, Jan. 30. A prediction that a Japanese army of 4,000,000 will make a final stand on Asia’s mainland was made by MajorGeneral J. W. Stilwell at a Press conference. He expressed the opinion that the Japanese can easily replace manpower losses so far suffered. Asked whether he saw a possibility of a Japanese collapse before their defeat on the battlefield, General Stilwell replied: “No, I do not.” Answering an inquiry as to whether the United States expected to furnish most of the manpower to defeat Japan, General Stilwell said that Marshal Chiang Kai-shek had stated publicly that he was getting ready for a great counter-offensive, and the Chinese must be prepared to bear the bulk of the burden. General Stilwell added that the Chinese have basic qualities and manpower. but someone must supply the modern equipment.
