RICCARTON NOTES

(Special) CHRISTCHURCH, Jan. 30. Mr F. C. Christie bought some foals by Royal Chief last season and entered them at the yearling sales held at Trentham recently. A colt from Clarenceuse was sold for 325gns. and a colt from Otetanui for 450gns., but Mr Christie decided to retain the three fillies, so they were not sent to the sale. Their dams are Gay Lark by Panmure-Mudlark; Bonny June by Song Bird-Obedio; and Royal Flower by Kilbroney-Lady Violet. They will be broken in and Mr Christie will race them, after which they .will be mated with Pioneer, a Paper Money stallion from Mudlark, by Gay Lad. M. Christie raced Pioneer as a two-year-old in Australia, where he was a winner. He has been used already at the stud and he is represented this season by a good looking foal from Wairaka, the dam of Prince Shad. About 20 horses . arrived home to-day from Wellington, after racing at Trentham.

R. B. Robinson will leave to-night with Wise Girl and Gunga Din, who are to race on Saturday at Winton, after which they are booked to remain for the Gore and Invercargill meetings. A. S. Ellis has arranged to leave here to-morrow with Rawhamai, also Abduction, a three-year-old Night Raid filly, who are to race at the Marlborough meeting on Saturday. G. Hampton will be the rider. Scottish Lad was lame after his work this morning but he seemed all right when he left the course. He has always been a sound horse, so it may be only a minor mishap.
