TRAGIC SITUATION
Food Shortage In France And Holland (Rec. 6.30 p.m.) LONDON, Jan. 27. The French food situation has become tragic, says Reuter’s Paris correspondent. One Cabinet Minister reports that parts of France are on the verge of starvation. The Government has decided to evacuate all children from Marseilles and Lyons to regions where food is more plentiful, adds the correspondent. 'rhe main meal in many small towns consists of dry bread dipped in wine. The number of waggons which the authorities arc able to allot lor the transport of food has fallen from 15,000 to 7000. 'rhe correspondent of the Associated American Press in Holland states that the woods in Northern Holland are disappearing and the population who cut down the wood for fuel are gradually disappearing, too, succumbing increasingly to starvation and contagious diseases. A reliable witness told the army authorities that unless Northern Holland is liberated by February thousands will die of starvation.
