TWELVE AIRMEN MISSING

Catalina Crashes Near Fiji Six Injured Persons Rescued

(N.Z.P.A.) WELLINGTON, Jan. 28. Twelve members of the Royal New Zealand Air Force have been reported missing owing to a Catalina flying-boat crashing near Fiji on Saturday. The aircraft had a total of 18 persons on board consisting of the crew and passengers, of wh,om six have been rescued slightly injured. The missing personnel are:— Missing Warrant Officer R. H. Thames Street, Riverton. Sergeant W. D. Boss. Father, Mr C. L. Boss, 29 Silverton Street, Anderson’s Bay. Corporal R. E. Allen, rather, Mr Allen, Edenview Road. Glen Eden. Auckland. Leading Aircraftman R. P. Wright. Wife, Mrs A. J. Wright, 17 Meola Road, Point Chevalier. Aircraftman B. J. Stone. Mother, Mrs K. B. Stone, 35 Allenby Avenue, Devonport. Leading Aircraftman J. M. Stewart. Father, Mr A. M. Stewart, 109 Campbell Road. Onehunga. Aircraftm n .1. S. Stafford. Mother. Mrs J. F. Stafford, 57 Wilton Road, Wades town. Leading Aircraftman E. W. McLeod. Wife, Mrs J. P. McLeod, Commercial Hotel, Hellensville. Leading Aircraftman V. O. McKain. Mother, Mrs M. McKain, Nikorimi Road, Waitara. Aircraftman A. H. Thomas. Mother, Mrs C. H. Thomas, 32 ’ Compton Street, Invercargill. The aircraft left its base in Fiji on Saturday morning. Late in the afternoon it was reported overdue, and an intensive search was carried out until dark by six aircraft. Rescued At dawn yesterday the search was continued and six of the occupants of the missing aircraft were located. These were:— Sergeant S. C. Saward, Tuakau. Sergeant M. Hunter, Invercargill. Corporal L. V. Perry. Tauranga. Corporal J. H-. Christenson, Linwood. Aircraftman A. E. Marsden, Birkenhead,

Auckland. The other person rescued was a passenger whose home is in Fiji. All were slightly injured. Further details are not yet available.
