TEMUKA BUS SERVICE

Report From Officer In Charge Improvement In Loading And Timetable

‘‘This report is most cheerful,” said Cr. E. G. Hancox at the monthly meeting of the Temuka Borough Council in reierriug to a letter received from the officer in charge of the Railways Road Service Office, Timaru (Mr J. G. C. Davie) in reply to a complaint made by the Council regarding overcrowding of the Temuka-Timaru bus service and the failure of the buses to keep to timeable. ‘‘lf the number of prams picked up by the buses is one of the main causes of delay, it is a sign that the population of Temuka is increasing.” "The number of notes tendered for fares shows that the population must be a wealthy one,” said the Mayor (Mr G. A. Harris). “I am in receipt of your letter relative to bus stops in Temuka, the overcrowding of vehicles and irregular departure,” wrote Mr Davie. “Referring to the overcrowding of buses, it is perhaps not realised that the certificate of fitness provides for 17 passengers standing on the usual vehicle on the service. I find there is an appearance of crowding with only 12 standing, but we endeavour always to operate with loads below that allowed and often supply an additional vehicle when we anticipate heavier loading. It will be realised that it is practically impossible to foresee the public demand. Drivers ring for assistance if they anticipate abnormal loadings. “As far as the timetable is concerned," continued Mr Davie, “I have personally travelled on the vehicles to find where the time is lost. Temuka is in the middle of a 23-miles run, and from my own observations the number of passengers who tender notes instead of small change and the number of prams picked up en route is the main cause of delay in leaving Temuka. Passengers often take an unusual time in boarding or alighting from the vehicle, or stock is met on the road. To limit the number of stops would probably be more unpopular than the variation in the timetable from Temuka. I shall be glad to in-, vestigate any suggestion put forward by your council.” Tne Mayor said that he had observed a considerable improvement in the loading since the complaint had been made. They were not so much concerned with the timetable as they appreciated that the service was being run under difficulties at the present time. Cr. L. F. N. ward said that he had discussed the matter of the bus stop at Gabites’ corner with the Traffic Inspector (Mr W. J. Tait), who would not like to see the present stop shifted. The verandah provided shelter to passengers when boarding and alighting from the buses. Cr. D. C. Clark said that there had recently been an improvement in the timetable. The overcrowding- referred to by him when he mentioned that the school bus licensed to carry 30 passengers left Timaru with 47 concerned one of the smaller buses. This particular bus was licensed to carry 23 sitting and seven standing. After further discussion, the letter was received.
