ROBBERY RAMPANT

France And Britain

LONDON, January 25. From 12,000 to 13,000 American soldiers are absent without leave in the European theatre, of whom more than half are mixed up in black market operations. A high military source, says the British United Press correspondent, said that a large proportion of the absentees had found their way to Paris, where, being off the payroll they had either to rob their friends or hold up somebody in order to live. Robbery in France and the United Kingdom was terrific. There were now 1723 men awaiting trial on charges of stealing petrol, cigarettes, and being absent without leave, and 70 to 80 were being picked up in Paris daily.
