LEGION OF MERIT

British Admiral Receives Honour (7.30 p.m.) LONDON, Dec. 20. Rear-Admiral V. A. Crutchely, V.C., D.S.C., has been awarded the United States Legion of Merit with the degree of Chief Commander. Admiral Harold Stark, Commander of the United States naval forces in Europe, presented the award, which is the highest degree of the Legion of Merit conferable by the United States armed forces. Vice-Admiral Crutchley commanded the task forces of the Seventh Fleet in the Pacific from March, 1943, to June, 1944. “He w’elded American and Aus-

tralian units into a powerful fighting force,” said the citation, w’hich added: “The task force under his forceful leadership provided effective support for amphibious assaults against Japanese strongholds vital for the reconquest of Northern New Guinea.”

Vice-Admiral Crutchley served in the Royal Navy in the Great War. He figured in a brilliant attempt to block Ostend Harbour on April 22-23, 1918, when he won the D.S.C.. and in a similar attempt in H.M.S. Vindictive on May 9-10 he won the Victoria Cross. He commanded H.M.S. Diomede on the New Zealand Station, and later was commander of the Australian Naval Squadron.
