School Concert The Public Hall was packed on Tuesday night on the occasion of the annual school concert and break-up. An excellent programme was provided by the pupils, who seemed to derive as much enjoyment in giving the items as their parents and friends did in listening to them. The chairman of the School Committee (Mr E. D. Hoskin), in welcoming those present, expressed his pleasure at the very fine attendance. He said that the school had just concluded a record year, and he paid a tribute to the work of the headmaster and the staff. At a suitable interval in the proceedings Mr J. Trimble, an ex-chairman of the School Committee, presented the athletic sports cup (country section). This had been won for tne second year in succession by the school sports team at the Combined South Canterbury Schools’ Tournament held in Timaru. Mr Trimble emphasised the importance of the physical side of education, and trusted that they would maintain the high standard which they had attained. He then called on the senior girl and boy sports champions (Joan O'Brien and Colin Barber) to accept the cup on behalf of the school. Sports certificates were then presented to the winners of various events as follows: Girls—Broad jump wider 15: Joan O'Brien; under 12: Rona Barber. High jump under 15: Joan O’Brien; under 12: Mavis Grant. 75 yards 13 and over: Joan O’Brien; under 11: Joy Hoskin. 50 yards under 10: Rona Barber; under 8: Joy Cochrane. Boys—Hop, step and jump, under 15: Colin Barber. 100 yards 13 and over: Ted Pankhurst. 75 yards under 12: Colin Skinner. Open relay race: Joan O’Brien, Ted Pankhurst, lan Hoskin and Colin Barber. The chairman read a telegram from Mi’ D. C. Kidd, M.P., congratulating the school on winning for the second time the Hurdley Shield for the best school garden in South Canterbury. The headmaster (Mr L. Brown) thanked all those who had assisted in making the function so successful, and expressed his appreciation of the wholehearted support extended to the school during the year by the residents of the district. The programme was as follows: Opening choruses, “St. Andrews by the Sea” and “Anchors Aweigh,” senior pupils; songs and recitations, “The Seasons,” junior pupils; humorous dialogue, “Buying a Hat,” lan Hoskin and Jim Sullivan; action song, “The Dream Man.” infants; folk songs, “The Frog in the Well” and “Elsie Marley,” junior pupils; play, “The Sewing Society,” ■ senior pupils; character dance, “Red Riding Hood." Lesley Martin; play, “Nursery Rhyme Land,” Infants; song. “Blowing Bubbles.” Joy Hoskin: folk dances, “Sellinger’s Round,” “Black Nag." junior girls; action song “Little Black Sanna." infants; pianoforte duet. “The Robin's Return,” J. Hoskin and L. Coe; folk songs, "The Cockle Gatherer." “Tirnanog.” junior girls: play. “Happenings in Healthland." juniors and infants (written and produced by the dental nurse. Miss M. Shilton); song. “I Love to Whistle,” Monica McCrossan; playette, “The Coming of Father Christmas,” junior pupils; songs and jokes by the Nigger Minstrels, senior pupils. At the conclusion of the programme all the children were given ice-cream, followed by a bounteous supper, reminiscent of nre-war days, provided by the parents. The hall was then cleared and an en iovable dance followed, the music being provided bv Mr L. Brown, with extras bv Miss M. Wilkie, A. Stowell, .1. Hanson and Mr N. Brady. Messrs Blunk and Cosgrove acted as M.C's. A liickv r.pol. waltz was won by Miss It. Murine and M 1 ’ N. Demnsev. The prizes were ;-iveii 1,1 Mi ■: B. L. Fiihli.
