CRAIGHEAD CHAPEL

Foundation Stone Laid “To the glory of. God, and in the faith of Jesus Christ, we place this foundation stone, in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost. Amen.” With this prayer, her Excellency Lady Newall laid the foundation’stone yesterday of St. Anthony’s Chapel, Craighead Diocesan School, Timaru. The ceremony was attended by the Governor-General Sir Cyril Newall, his equerry, Major H. A. Jaffray, pupils of the school and a goodly number of parents and friends. Archdeacon H. W. Monaghan, who conducted the service, assisted by the Rev. L. A. Barnes, after apologising for the absence of his Grace Archbishop West-Watson, who was in Australia, congratulated all who had contributed to the happy event of the day. In a brief outline of the history of the school, Mr Monaghan said that after the death of their estimable headmistress, Miss Salmond, they had been confronted with the difficulties of the depression years when the school roll had fallen to 23 pupils. Help had been solicited from the Christchurch diocese, but they had been advised to close the school' and sell the buildings. They had persevered and the laying of the foundation stone of the chapel that day was the seal of their success. He thanked the Board of Governors for their unfailing support, and paid a special tribute to the work of Mr W. H. Walton. Lady Newall’s great interest in the school had been a source of inspiration and great encouragement. After an address, Lady Newall was presented with a leather-bound school prayer book by Jessica Howell.
