WOMEN’S INSTITUTES Waimate Federation

About 1600 parcels for prisoners of war are being packed in New Zealand every day. No praise could be too high for those women workers of many organisations who by their efforts are keeping alive the body and spirit of so many New Zealanders in enemy prison

camps. The statement was made by the Dominion president (Mrs H. J. Barnicoat), in an address to the half-yearly conference of the Waimate District Federation of Women’s Institutes in Timaru on Friday. Rehabilitation of service men and women would present problems which would have to be tackled in a spirit of tolerance and understanding, said Mrs Barnicoat. They were not to be made feel that they were strangers in their own country. Members of the Institute were commended by Mrs L. Finlay for carrying on so bravely during such arduous times. Special thanks was due to the Otipua group for raising £145 by means of a patriotic shop day. The amount had been allocated to the Levels quota. A request for more goods for the depot was made by Mrs L. McAlister, who said that poultry was urgently needed for Christmas patrons. The work of the Stratheona Training Hostel was elaborated by Mrs J. A. McLeod, who answered many questions. The establishment of peace in relation to Germany was the subject of an address by the W.E.A. tutor (Mr B. Pickering).

The Mayoress (Mrs A. E. S. Hanan) extended thanks to the 12 institutes represented, for their co-operation in patriotic work.
