RACING ON AND OFF THE TRACK

Southland horses won four of the eight races at the Otago Hunt meeting.

The price paid for the Dunedin Guineas candid-ate. Piccolo, is said ■<> have beep l2sogns. The Taranaki three-year-old, Master Ted,, ft to be sent north to compete m 'zte Great Northern Guineas. ' Strip, whose only race last season was in a hack steeplechase at Dunedin, will probably revert to hurdle racing at Washdyke next week. Princess Anne, who is to run in the McLean Stakes, is a sister to the Avondale Guineas winner, My Bonnie. Fairy Bard had to forgo both engagements at Dunedin, as a result of a knock received at Orari. A division seems probable in the Spring Stakes at Washdyke. Thirty-six nominations have been received, ana the safety number is 24. If a division is required the stake will be increased from £145 to £ISO. In the Geraldine Cup, Sascha was weighted 61b above Hearth. In the Ranfurly Handicap Hearth is 2lb above Sascha. At Orari, Arctic Dawn was within 11b of Hearth; at Dunedin he receives 111 b from the Mosgiel mare. Even Calm won a race at Riccarton last season, but it was at the C.J.C. Middlepark meeting. The totalisator was not operating, and Even Calm was consequently eligible for the Novice Handicap at Dunedin. The probable favourite for the McLean Stakes appears to "be the Coron ach filly, Racilla, who is trained at Riccarton for Mr F. W. Hughes, of Sydney. , The Timaru-bred two-year-old, Royal Slipper, which won the Pioneer Handicap at the Avondale meeting is down to contest the Welcome Stakes at Slerslie. The win recorded by Royal Slipper was full of merit and the daughter of Paper Slipper certainly looked as if she could have won more easily. In the Welcome Stakes, to be run at Ellerslie on October 14, Royal Slipper will meet Ghazipur for the first time. Sir Ringman, who met with an accident and was unable to race at the Grand National meeting, is again among H. E. Gray’s active brigade. My Bonnie is reported to be looking better than when she won the Avondale Guineas, and as the field for the Great Northern Guineas will be practically the same the little Coronach filly will not be at a longer price. There has been considerable confusion in connection with the announcements of the result of the Flaxbourne Hack at Hastings. The official verdict was Ramicourt 1, Golden Souvenir 2. The Bulandshar hurdler Travancore has been compelled to remain at Ellerslie. It was intended to ship him back to Hastings a week ago, but he sustained injuries through getting cast in his box. Tutere ’ returned to the winning list at the Ohinemuri meeting, but Powys threw the race away by boring out and letting Tutere and Gaymeer up inside him. Powys was overhauling them again after being straightened up. Gordon Richards has won the English jockeys’ championship 16 times in 19 years, and already is assured oi the premiership this season. Last season he passed Fred Archer’s record total of 2749 wins, and is now well past the 2800 mark. Richards is about 39. but he is riding as well as ever and still scales about 7.9. Sona, favourite for the Hastings Stakes got into trouble at the stare, where Provider lost his rider. Gigli went to the front in the straight, but Subdued’s brother. Majestic, finished fast and beat him home by a length, the pair being well in advance of the remainder of the field. A. C. Messervey, rider of Provider, was caught by a wire attached to the uprights of the barrier and received lacerations on -ns neck and shoulders. RICCARTON NOTES (Special) CHRISTCHURCH, Oct. 3. Two trainers were represented in the batch of horses that went south last night for the Dunedin meeting. C. C. McCarthy’s stable provided John o’ London, Chicago and the two-year-olds, Eudora and Superlative, while M. J. Wadley took Air Ace, Vafort and the two-year-olds, Belle Leonne and Deep Harmony. The last of the horses from here will leave to-morrow night. They are John Gay, Debater, Lalla Meer, Rahiri, Trueway and the two-year-olds, Princess Anne and Montezuma. The No. 6 grass track was in good order this morning, when there was some useful work. John Gay came home fast over six furlongs, while Princess Anne and Montezuma sprinted three furlongs in fine style, finishing on terms. L. J. Ellis arrived home this morning from his trip to Hastings, whew he was riding on Saturday. Owing to the incident over the week-end, when Kindergarten and his half-brother Golden Souvenir, were concerned in a fight, the arrangement for Ellis to bring them to Riccarton had to be varied. It is hoped they will soon recover from their experience, in which case they may be prepared in the North Island for their Trentham engagements, after which Ellis will bring them here to be trained. Findon has resumed work and he looks well after a week on the easy list. He is due for his next race at Trentham this month. Lord Advocate and Justitia were nominated by mistake for the Wellington meeting, and they will not make the trip to-Trentham. R. Register, who has lived tor some time on Racecourse Road, has taken over the property recently vacated by D. Cotton. (Special) CHRISTCHURCH. Oct. 2. The five furlong barrier at Riccarton was at the disposal of the trainers this morning for their two-year-olds and a few candidates for the McLean Stakes were given some education in starting before leaving for Wingatui. Test Pilot was schooled by himself over four hurdles. He hit the first, after which he went on to complete his task without further mistake. He s due to contest the hurdle race at Washdyke next week and if he gets round safely he will qualify for the highweight events at the Canterbury Jockey Club’s meeting. The apprentice. C. McDonald, is back with F. D. Jones after resting for a week, following the fall at Geraldine, from which he escaped with nothing worse than bruises. Riccarton’s newest trainer, J. A. Cox, who has just received his licence, will have Warfield ready to race in a few weeks. He is also working the two-year-old filly. Royal Vestment, by Sir Galloway (Paper Money-Green Cloth) from Pink Robe by Pink Coat. A. S. Ellis has been busy with the two-year-old, High Counsel, oy Solicitor-General from Delice, . tht dam of Waltzing Matilda. He is recovering from a cold and he will have a spell before being prepared for racing. Stonyhurst Stud has suffered a loss, in the death of Wild Talk, a nine-year-old mare by Winning Hit from Babel. News has been received that, she broke her back while on a visit to a stud in the North Island.
