UNEMPLOYMENT
Action By Labour Party The question of unemployment in Timaru was discussed at a meeting of the Timaru branch of the Labour Party. Inquiries revealed that during the last week, owing,to the curtailment of orders, one local factory had dis-pensed-with the services of several of its employees, while several men hitherto employed grading and rebagging patatoes had had their employment terminated owing to the work being completed. All these factors had made unemployment a little more acute. In an endeavour to bring about an amelioration of the position during the next few months, after which it is hoped seasonal work will again be in full swing, it was decided to communicate with the Minister of Industrial Manpower (the Hon. A. McLagan, M.L.C.) pointing out the position and suggesting to him that he get in touch with the local Borough Council (as the largest employing authority) in an endeavour to arrive at some arrangement which would result in the absorption of most of those needing employment.
