Tribute To Pioneers
■ At a meeting of the committee of the School Association of the Pleasant Point District High School, the president. the Rev. I. Dixon, welcomed Mr E. Hart, representative of Rosewill. The treasurer reported that the membership now stood at 270. A donation from Mr D. Burnett was acknowledged. Plans were discussed for honouring the pioneers at a combined service on the Sunday preceding Anniversary Day, followed by a special day at the school, and an At Home to pioneers. A historical sub-committee is to prepare material for the occasion, which is expected to create widespread interest in the district. Patriotic Fair The balance-sheet of the recent Patriotic Fair shows that the gross takings amounted to £1332/16/3 and expenses to £4O/10/11, leaving a credit Of £1292/5/4. Peace Celebrations A meeting presided over by Mr M. Maze was held to discuss the coming peace celebrations. It was decided to hold a thanksgiving service at the school and the next day a function in the Domain to be followed by a Victory Ball in the evening. Guide Coming-of-age An impressive camp fire ceremony was held on the hill top on Saturday evening to commemorate the twentyfirst anniversary of the establishment of the guide movement in New Zealand. Guides, Scouts and Cubs, together with members of the local committee, were present and' a varied programme was presented. A birthday cake to honour the first birthday of the local Guide Troop was presented by Mrs H. Walden, and cut in turn by Captain J. Halstead. Lieutenant C. Davison and the patrol leaders. Farewell Gatherings The combined Golf and Tennis Clubs held'a very enjoyable afternoon at the club pavilion on Saturday, when opportunity was taken to bid farewell to Miss J. Halstead. Mr M. Patrick, president of the Golf Club, congratulated Miss Halstead on her decision to take up nursing, and wished her every success in her new sphere of life. Mr D. S. Loder, on behalf of the Tennis Club, spoke of the enthusiasm with which Miss Halstead always joined in the sport. Mrs Patrick then presented Miss Halstead with a gift of money on behalf of the clubs. Miss Halstead suitably replied. Members of the Girl Guides, Boy Scouts and Cubs, together with parents and friends of Miss J. Halstead, gathered to bid her farewell. Lieutenant C. Davison, on behalf of the Guides, wished Miss Halstead the best of luck in her new profession, and spoke of the good work she had done as captain of the Guides. Patrol Leaders M. Anderson, F. Taylor, and M. Fort then presented Miss Halstead with a pair of slippers in Guide colours and an envelope containing money. Scoutmaster Schurr spoke on behalf of the Scouts and Cubs and expressed appreciation of the work done by Miss ■ Halstead. Mrs T. Dixon spoke on behalf of the committee and friends. In replying Miss J. Halstead thanked friends for their kind remarks and good wishes, and appealed to the Guides to be loyal to their new captain. During the evening items were contributed as follows: Spngs. Kathleen Brown; recitation, Mavis Anderson; guitar solo, Morris Taylor; Irish jig, Alison Saunders; sextette. Guiders and Scouters.
