U.S. Ships Caught In Hurricane (Rec. 7.30 p.m.) NEW YORK, Sept. 30. The Wavy Department announced that 344 men were lost, dead or missing hoiu thp destroyer Wan uieion. coastguard cutters Jackson and Bedloe, the lightship Vineyard Sound and one minesweeper which were wrecked in the hurricane on September 14. The cutters capsized, while protecting a Liberty ship torpedoed off the North Carolina coast. The lightship is missing without trace from a station off the New England coast.
