FOOD FOR GREECE
Immediate Dispatch Of Large Shipment
(N.Z.P.A.) WELLINGTON, Oct. 1. The Prime Minister (the Rt. Hon P. Fraser) announced that arrangements had been completed for the immediate dispatch to the Middle East of a substantial shipment of foodstuffs for the people of Greece as a gift from the Government and people of New Zealand immediately their territory is freed.
Stating that this country was bound by special ties to the people of Greece, Mr Fraser said the arrangements represented the fulfilment of the intention which the Governnmet long ago had in mind to make some special gesture to a nation which had suffered so cruelly under the scourge of the Nazi oppressor. Now the tide had turned it was appropriate to recall the friendship and help which the Greeks had extended to our men throughout the whole of the Greek campaign. The fullest co-operation in the matter of shipping had been extended by the United Kingdom authorities, and the foodstuffs would be among the first relief supplies to reach Greece after her liberation.
“As the result of my discussions with the UNRRA authorities and the Allied military liaison in the Middle East, i procedure has been devised to ensure that the goods which have been appropriately marked to indicate their origin and purpose, will be distributed to cases of special need.”
