INDUSTRIAL TARGETS

Cologne Again Visited LONDON, September 27. More than 1100 Flying Fortresses and Liberators to-day attacked industrial targets at Cologne, a synthetic oil plant at Ludwigshafen, a tank factory at Kassel, an ordnance depot at Mainz, and key railway yards along the Rhine. More than 100 German fighters were singled out, for attack on one formation of Liberators. Other crews reported no encounter with enemy planes. Strong forces of Mustangs, Lightnings and Thunderbolts, which escorted the heavy bombers, reported numerous engagements in which they shot down 31 planes. Fighters also destroyed five. The anti-aircraft, fire was Intense, particularly at Ludwigshafen and Cologne. Clouds obscured the targets, therefore all bombing was by instrument. Forty-two bombers and seven fighters are missing.
