District Activities

There were three Ranger companies, one in each district, with a total membership of 49, and there were 13 Guide companies with a total of 245 Guides, stated the twenty-first report of the South Canterbury Girt Guides’ Association which was adopted at the annual meeting in Timaru or Wednesday. Five Brownie packs with 102 Brownies was a slight increase on last year, and the report mentioned an increase in the number of Guiders and the formation of three new companies—Timaru South. Pleasant Point and Waimate No. 3.

A Divisional camp, held at Pleasant Point in January for 10 days, was attended bv representatives from Waimate. Fairlie, Pleasant Point, Kai Arahi, Ist Timaru, Temuka, Geraldine and Cheviot. This was followed by a Ranger camp, and Takaina camped at the Old Mill site. There was a Lone camp at Waimate and at Easter a camp was held for Guiders who had previously attended a training course.

The following warrants were issued: Miss H. M. Westoby, captain, Miss D, A. Rogers. Brown Owl, and Miss Q Pelvin, lieutenant, all of Waimate.

In April the Guides were asked to collect rags for the Armed Forces and as a result of a house-to-house canvass one and a half tons of clean rags were dispatched to an Air Force station and a half ton of waste material was sold, the proceeds being for patriotic funds. The amount collected by Timaru was. the sixth largest in the Dominion. Guides also assisted in collecting

garments for the Lady Galway Guild. Geraldine Rangers raised £44 for the St. John Ambulance Brigade and the Guides there contributed £7 for the relief of overseas Girl Guides. For the Baden Powell Memorial Fund Timaru Guides raised £5 and Waimate Brownies £l/15'-. The latter also contributed 5/- to the St. Ormond Street Hospital for Sick Children.

Miss M. E. Marriott, Divisional Commissioner, who presided, mentioned that the twenty-first anniversary of the foundation of Guiding in New Zealand would be celebrated in September. She took the opportunity to pay a tribute to the work of former Guides and committee members in the South Canterbury Assoeia lion. Mrs A. E. S. Hanan was elected president. Vice-presidents are as follows: Mesdames T. W. Sat.tert.hwaite, W. C. Burns, B. E. H. Tripp, W. G. Tweedy, W. H. Walton, F. E. Duncan and Miss L. M. Fussell. Mesdames F. G. M. Raymond, Hole, Darling, Best, D. Barnes and Miss D. B. McLean were elected to the executive, to which will be added a representative from each company committee. Miss F. M. Clissold was re-elected honorary secreeary.
