SOIL CONSERVATION

Sir,—Apathy was undoubtedly the cause of such a poor attendance at the recent lecture on “Erosion and Soil Conservation” given by Mr A. J. Davey at Temuka. A mild prescription in the shape of a “demand notice” will be handed out shortly, with larger doses to follow. Then people will wonder why there is more taxation, for under the present money system there cannot be anything else. As I see it, this is a national undertaking, with a national asset as the result; therefore the money required ought to come from the national pool, which should consist of interest and debt-free money. Why turn an asset into a liability for posterity, as is done in all cases to-day, by borrowing under the present monetary system, and thus cancelling out all benefits that would accrue to the people by having the work done debt-free.—l am, etc., TEMUKA STUDENT. CORRESPONDENTS ANSWERED FAIR PLAY: Not a public question.
