BASES IN PACIFIC
American Access After The War (11.15 p.m.) CANBERRA, July 3. A hint that the United States will be given access to island bases in the Pacific after the war was given to-day by the Prime Minister, Mr J. Curtin. “Access to these bases is a different thing from sovereignty,” said Mr Curtin. “I have no doubt whatever that the United Nations in preserving the peace of the world will make the requisite arrangements to ensure that strategical interests for the preservation of peace will be met,” Mr Curtin said, commenting on a report from the "Chicago Tribune,” in which it was stated that America could not play her full part in preserving peace in the Pacific unless she got the bases she wanted.
