NURSES’ HOME

Sir,—lt is scandalous to think that a few so-called “sports'’ will fight toon: and nail to prevent the sisters and nurses getting what they richly deserve, a home close to their duties. In times like (hose some public men seem to take a pride in putting the country to all the trouble and expense they can Our spoon-fed "sports ' are help--1.0 cost the Timaru ratepayers close on £lO 000 a vear in the upkeep of more than 200 acres of land. What of the yachtsmen, the people who go 100 miles for a days skating, the mountain climbers, the fishermen, duck-shooters, golfers, bowlers, hikers and many others? They have to pay their own way and do not ask the public for help. The staff of the Public Hospital should do the same as the miners and wharf labourers. If they do not get what they want, they should just walk out.—l am. etc., NOT VINDICTIVE. PLAYING AREAS FOR NURSES Sir,—I was astonished to read of the decision of the Reserves Committee of the Borough Council to decline the application of the Nurses’ Basketbail Club for use of the Park playing area. Does the Committee mean the playing area is only for use of certain people? I always understood it was for use of the public. The nursing profession is one of the hardest worked anywhere. It looks very selfish not to allow the girls to use the playing area in their leisure hours, which are very few. It is a nice climb up the hill to the Caledonian grounds after the nurses have been on their feet all day. I have been a frequent visitor to the Hospital for some years and know how hard the nurses work. If the hockey clubs wish to claim the area for matches, surely they could be unselfish and be sports enough to allow the nurses the use of the playing area when they do not need it. I hope the Reserves Committee will reconsider its decision.—I am. etc., UNSELFISH
