Morning Bus Service

A 1 the last meeting of the Timaru Borough Council a representative of the Timaru branch of the National Council of Women made a request for a bus service to be run from town to various termini at 11.30 in the mornings to enable women to complete shopping trips and return to their homes before mid-day. The omnibus engineer has reported that the present running schedule ot the buses would enable such trips to be run daily at a cost of 29/-. The Omnibus and Electricity Committee, however, does not wish to rush impetuously to its conclusions and has decided "to deter further consideration in the meantime.” It is difficult to see why the committee should have to transact its business in this cautious fashion. Housewives in these days are the most sorely tried section of the community and any concession likely to ease their burden in the slightest degree should be readily granted by men who possess any sympathy or imagination. It may happen that the fares on the extra trips will not always cover the 29/- outlay, but the whole bus service is being rim at. a handsome profit ami it would show poor spirit on the part of the Omnibus and Electricity Committee to refuse a reasonable request on behalf of the housewives of Timaru because thev could not guarantee a little more profit for the buses. The Borough Council this evening should take the generous view and at the same time compel the committee to act expeditiously.
