COMMERCIAL DUNEDIN MARKETS

KEEN DEMAND FOR POTATOES (N.Z.P.A.) DUNEDIN, June 16. Most of the interest in the wheat market to-day centres on undergrade lines and fowl wheat, and these are the only grades offering. At present the demand for fowl wheat is for good, sound lines only, and lines out of condition are difficult to place. Lines of oats are coming on the market and the supply is sufficient for local requirements in the meantime. Most of the samples are of Gartons or Gartons onwards, the maximum price for which is 3/6 a bushel on trucks at country sidings, sacks extra. No shipping business is passing. The market for chaff continues firm, with a steady inquiry. The bulk of the supplies coming to hand is being drawn from North Otago and Canterbury. The value of good bright oaten sheaf chaff is £8 a ton for truck lots, ex truck, Dunedin.

There has been a particularly keen inquiry from the North Island for potatoes during the week. The bulk of the crop in Otago has changed hands, and it is not expected that many more shipments will be made from here. All well-graded lines are readily saleable.

Information during the week from Wellington is to the effect that permission has now been granted to exporters to shij> overseas orders for ryegrass received to the end of May. Up to the present merchants have been forced to carry seed sold overseas, not knowing whether they would receive permission to ship it. A few lines of Montgomery red clover are now coming in for dressing, but the quality in most cases, is only fair. The yields have not been high. There is a sound inquiry for high testing lines of certified cocksfoot. Best lines of inferior quality are difficult to place. The market for crested dogstail and brown top continues firm.
