PENICILLIN
(N.Z.P.A.) OAMARU. Mar. 30 Penicillin, the new and rare drug, the successful application of which has brought it into world-wide prominence, to-day is being used with beneficial results by the medical staff of the Oamaru Public Hospital in the treatment of a patient suffering from osteomyelitis. A noteworthy feature of the case is that sulphonamide drugs apparently had no effect, the patient’s condition being critical when penicillin brought an immediate improvement. The patient under treatment is a pupil at the Waitaki Boys’ High School. When the case was diagnosed as one of osteomyelitis, the registered treatment with the sulphonamides was given, but failed to produce any favourable reaction. As the patient's condition was deteriorating, the medical staff applied for penicillin, which was made available. An almost immediate improvement was noted, which has been maintained, promising to lead to another notable recovery, directly attributable to penicillin.
