BIRCHWOOD MINE

Fire Limits Output (N.Z.P.A.) INVERCARGILL. Mar. 1. Another fire has broken out in the new section of the Birchwood mine, and this has had to be sealed off. This section is in addition to the one sealed after the recent explosion, and now only a limited working area is left for the production of coal. It is probable that a large proportion of the miners engaged at the Birchwood mine before the explosion will be unable to produce coal there in future, as the working places are now severely restricted. The Star mine at Ohai was idle today as the result of a breakage in the haulage rope early in the shift.
