CORVETTE ARBUTUS
New Zealand Crew N.Z.P.A.—Special Correspondent LONDON, February 29. Arbutus, which with another Flower class corvette, Arabis, has been presented bv the British Government to the Royal New Zealand Navy, is commahded by Lieutenant-Commander J. A. Rhind, of Lyttelton. Arabis is com™al'bed by Lieutenant-Commander T. H. Beelye, of Dunedin. The officers of Arbutus, in addition to Lieutenant-Commander Rhind, include: First officer. Lieutenant A. I. Floris, R.N.Z.N.R. (Hamilton); navigation officer. Lieutenant N. H. Whatman (Waimate); anti-submarine control officer, Lieutenant G. V. Fisher (Auckland).
IJeutenant-Commander Rhind previously served in minesweeping trawlers m the Mediterranean, working off the coasts of North Africa, Corsica, Sardinia, and Malta. Lieutenant Floris previously commanded a corvette on escort duties in the western approaches. Lieutenant Whatman served in a frigate. He was in Bougie Bay when the Awatea sank and he saw her pass 50 yards away, burning furiously. Lieutenant Fisher took part in the St. Nazalre raid.
