FRENCH RIVIERA
Defences Strengthened
(8.50 p.m.) LONDON, Jan. 13. Thousands of conscripted French labourers under Germans are working day and night to strengthen the defences along the French Riviera and the whole coastline from Marseilles through Toulon, Nice and Cannes to Mentone, says the Stockholm correspondent of the "Daily Mail.' The Germans have guns placed at intervals of 50 yards along the famous Promanada des Anglais, Nice. A Commando Raid French Commandos from Corsica are reported to have raided Nice, says the Berne correspondent of the “New York Times.’’ They threw grenades into a restaurant serving German officers, wounding several, and returned without challenge. The Gestapo made many arrests and threaten reprisals. The action may mark the turning point in the war for the French, since it is taken as an indication of further French participation.
