Singles And Pairs Championships

Timaru Players Qualify (N.Z.P.A.) DUNEDIN, January 12. Nineteen greens were in use for the first day’s play in the singles and another four for the pairs at the New Zealand Bowling Associations’ annual tournament which opened to-day. The 544 entries in the singles have been divided into 76 sections, 38 of which were played to-dav, while the remainder will be played on 18 greens to-morrow. Tire large entry for the pairs, numbering 486. has been divided into 70 sections, eight sections being played to-day, while 10 sections will be played on five greens to-morrow. Tire following 17 players in the singles, who won all five games, qualified for post-sectional play with two lives: A. M. Macdonald (Balmacewen), L. C. Dewar (Sydenham), M. McKenzie (Te Rangi, Invercargill), M. J. Squire (Hawera), J. L. Cushnie (Edendale), A. N. Hamlyn (Ashbury), T. A. McClymont (Ponsonby), W. F. Mills (Tainui), J. Higginson (Grey Lynn), K. S. Ewing (Stratford), C. Spearman (Christchurch R.S.A.). D. H. Joseph (Canterbury), W. A. Lee (Sydenham), G. A. Deare (Carlton). A. Clark (Ashbury). H. M. Dykes (Seatoun) and D. Hunter (Petone).

Jackson and J. Ure (North End, Invercargill), D. Bennie and J. Buchan (Balmacewen), D. Menzies and J. Lee (Timaru), A. Silver and J. Veitch (Djmedin), L. A. Hulston and R. Haworth (Canterbury), T. Bowes and W. O’Neill (Runanga), J. McKenzie and H. Belcher (St. Kilda), A. Lewin and L. G. Mercer (Greymouth), and W. E. Goodwin and W. J. Goodwin (Upper Hutt). Champions in Action The present title holder, C. Spearman (Christchurch R.S.A.). won all his games by handy margins. Two champions seen in action on the Northeast Valley green were G. A. Deare and A. Williamson (Canterbury). Deare, who won the singles in 1940, had his closest game in the fourth round, when A. Donaldson (Dunedin) held him to the score of 18-14.

Williamson, a member of the present champion four, did not qualify. D. Hunter IPetone), a member of the winning pairs in 1937, and D. H. Joseph (Canterbury), a member of the present champion fours, each won five games. Considerable interest centred in the performance of D. Vaughan (Caledonian), the Dunedin Centre's champion of champions for the last two years. He won his first four games by big margins but in his last game he was beaten by J. C. Taplln (Auckland Transport) by 21 points to 9.

J. R. Smith (Elmwood), who was runner-up in 1941, did not qualify. Another surprise was the defeat of the present pairs champion, H. S. Maslin (Hawera) in the second game, but he won four games in the section and went forward with one life. Maslin's partner in the last pairs championship, W. J. Squire (Hawera) won all his games by comfortable margins.
