Sergeant N. T. Satterthwaite
Killed in action in Italy on December 15, 1943, Sergeant Norman Timaru (“Dick”) Satterthwaite was the youngest son of Mrs M. G. Satterthwaite, Timaru, and the late Mi- T. W. Satterthwaite.
Sergeant Satterthwaite was born at Timaru on July 27, 1911, and received his education at the Timaru Main School and the Timaru Boys’ High School. He was on the staff of Messrs Andrews and Beaven, Ltd., Christchurch, before he entered the Army. After 12 months’ service in New Zealand, during which time he gained commissioned rank, he embarked on overseas service as a sergeant with the Tenth Reinforcement. He was later posted to the Twenty-fifth Battalion of the New Zealand Division in the Middle East.
During his school career, Sergeant Satterthwaite took part in all school activities. At the Timaru Boys’ High School he was a prefect and a member of the First Fifteen. After leaving school he played for the Old Boys’ Football Club and the Aorangi Tennis Club and represented South Canterbury at both football and lawn tennis. While in Christchurch, Sergeant Satterthwaite played golf as a member of the Harewood and Waitakiri clubs. Sergeant Satterthwaite leaves a widow, the eldest daughter of Mr E. H. Button, of Timaru, and the late Mrs Button.
