TIMARU SCOTTISH SOCIETY
Hogmanay Celebrated
To foster a love of Scottish music and literature and to uphold Scottish tradition are the objects o fthe Timaru Scottish Society and on New Year's Eve, Hogmanay, the chief gathering of the year, is held., when fellow Scots from many parts of the Dominion attend.
Many visitors were present at the New Year concert in the Scottish Hall, including the Rev. Clyde Carr, M.P., the Mayor and Mayoress (Mr and Mrs A. E. S. Hanan), and representatives of kindred societies. According to custom the Chief (Mr E. A. Wright) preceded by the Society's piper, marched through the hall. With the chieftains at the salute all clansmen participated in the opening ceremony. Extending a welcome the Chief said that the attendance was one of the largest in the history of the Society. Before the concert programme- the Timaru Highland Pipe Band played selections in front of the hall.
Items were contributed as follows: “A Guid New Year,” Mr Alick Nicol; songs by Mesdames F. H. King and E. D. Mcßae, Misses Noreen Cotter, Anne Campbell, Messrs A. Shrimpton, G. Jones, C. Kelly, A. Nicol and P. Cook; violin solo, Miss Daphne Nicol; pianoforte solo, Mr C. Parnell; national dances, Misses Rena Jacobs, Dorothy Lyne, Audrey Mackay, Edith Richardt and Mary Frame. The official pianiste was Mrs E. Richards, and the piper Mr E. Parker.
Senior Chieftain A. W. McNeil proposed a vote of thanks to the performers.
At the conclusion of the dance the gathering sang Auld Lang Syne.
