WAIMATE SCHOOL JUBILEE
Celebration At Nukuroa
Reunion At New Year
The school at Nukuroa (formerly known as Hannaton) was opened in 1894, and thus attains its jubilee in 1944. The occasion is to be marked by a reunion of former pupils and teachers at a function to be held at the New Year.
Arrangements for the fitting celebration of the jubilee have been under way for some time and were finalised at a recent meeting of the Jubilee Committee. Mr F. J. Henshaw presided. The secretary (Mr J. F. Foley) reported that circulars sent to former pupils and teachers had resulted in a large number of acceptances of the committee’s invitation to be present at the celebrations.
The chairman said that visitors and friends would be entertained by a programme of sports, but seating difficulties would restrict the attendance at the banquet to ex-pupils and exteachers. There would be a roll-call in the morning and photographs would be taken. In the evening a concert would be held, and a church parade on Sunday would be followed by a jubilee ball on Monday which would bring the celebrations to a close. He expressed the confidence of the committee in the success of the various functions at which old associations and friendships of schooldays would be renewed.
Among guests at the function will be Mr D. C. Kidd, M.P., the Mayor of Waimate (Mr W. F. Boland). Inspector W. Packer, and Mr K. Kippenberger, who is a former master at the school but will represent the Canterbury Education Board, of which he is member for the district.
