WOMEN’S INSTITUTES
ROSEWILL The president, Mrs Bailey, welcomed an average attendance of members to the November meeting. She urged members to attend a meeting in Timaru to hear Mrs Deans. It was decided to respond to an appeal from ; “Strathcona” by sending gifts of gorceries. It was also decided to hold the usual Children’s Christmas Party in the hall and grounds. An excellent report on the half-yearly Federation meeting was presented by Mrs Moore. The roll call, “a Scottish contribution," was well responded to and provided much merriment. While parcels were being packed for soldiers overseas, pioneer tales were related by members. Competitions resulted: Premier bloom. Mesdames Bresnahan and Bailey (equal) 1, Miss Beckingsale 3. Oatcakes, Miss Beckingsale 1, Mrs Bassett 2, Mrs Murray 3. Mrs Bassett and Miss Beckingsale were hostesses. FAIRVIEW At the October meeting of the Fairview Women’s Institute, Mrs Butler presided. There was a large attendance of members and visitors. Two new members, Mrs McDonald and Mrs Verity were welcomed. A letter was read from Norman Vincent who had received a parcel from the Institute. Mrs Button, delegate to the Federation meeting in Timaru, gave her report. Mrs Butler and Mrs Button volunteered to send the soldiers’ parcels for this month. Mrs Button demonstrated on Christmas novelties and Mrs Cox gave a competition. The wandering shilling competition was won by Miss V. Stretch. Mostesses for the afternoon were Mesdames Jackson, French and Miss Mercer. Competitions resulted: Lettuce, Mrs Jackson 1, Mrs Shewn 2, Mrs Campbell 3. Kettle holder, Mrs Cox 1, Mrs French 2, Mrs Hawke 3. Premier bloom (large), Mrs E. J. Butchers 1. Mrs Jackson 2. Mrs W. Butchers 3. Premier bloom (small), Mrs Hawke 1. Mrs Vincent 2. Mrs Dale 3.
