WAVE OF UNREST
Underground Activity in Europe Prospect Of Invasion By Telegraph—N.Z. Press Assn. —Copyright LONDON, Nov. 10. The prospect of an early Allied invasion of the Continent has led to a sudden increase of underground activity throughout Europe and according to reports received the Germans are powerless to prevent this new wave of anti-Nazi activity. The Algiers radio to-day broadcast an appeal by the National Council of the Resistance Movement in Algiers to all Frenchmen in France to hold antiNazi strikes to-morrow. Armistice Day. The most active centre of unrest is Austria. Reports that continue to reach London speak of rioting and clashes between Austrian workers and Gestapo troops. Rioting was first reported after the declaration by the conference at Moscow that the Allies would liberate Austria and make it an independent State. The Algiers radio said to-day that Austrian soldiers have become so unreliable that the Nazi High Command has issued a decree separating German and Austrian soldiers in army formations. Anti-Nazis in western provinces of Austria are reported to have linked up with Yugoslav partisans. Serious Menace According to Swedish reports Polish partisans have become a serious menace to the Nazis. Attacks on German soldiers in Poland are increasing. Panic gripped Bucharest as the Russians draw near to the Rumanian border, say reports from Istanbul. In the past week there have been nearly 3000 applications in Bucharest for passports to Switzerland. Industries are being moved inland and Bessarabia is being evacuated. According to Swiss reports German settlers in occupied Russia, numbering about 100.000 have been ordered to return to Germany immediately.
A large new battle-training ground, where American assault forces will be put through final full-scale exercises for invasion of the Continent is to be opened soon in the south-west of England, says the “Evening Standard.” Notices have already been posted throughout the area notifying that a large section of agricultural land is being requisitioned for military purposes. The districts affected must be evacuated by December 20. The area includes five small villages, parts of four others and about 3000 people must find other accommodation.
A complete battle school will be established. The troops will be taken through second front training with all the embellishments of real war, including the use of live ammunition.
