TWO MINUTES’ SILENCE
Armistice Day in Timaru
In memory of the fallen, two minutes’ silence was' observed in Timaru from 11 a.m. yesterdav (Armistice Day). Flags were flown throughout the town, and at 11 o’clock sirens were sounded, the flags lowered to half-mast, and after two minutes, during which traffic halted and a silence was kept, the sirens resounded and the flags went to the masthead again. Armistice Dav has been observed since the signing of an agreement to cease hostilities by Germany and the Allies at 11 a.m. on November 11. 1918. but the roar of a warplane overhead during the silence in Timaru yesterday was a reminder of the conflict in progress at present. A wreath of laurel and Flanders poppies was laid at the Cenotaph at 11 am. yesterday by the Mayor of Timaru (Mr A. E. S. Hanan). Also present at this ceremony were the president (Mr Alex Belli and representatives of the South Canterbun' branch of the Returned Services’ Association.
