REQUEST REFUSED Sale Of Arms To Spain
(11.15 p.m.) NEW YORK. Aug. 24. The United States has refused General Franco’s request for the sale of arms and ammunition to Spain. The London correspondent of the ‘‘New York Times" learns from a trustworthy source that the refusal followed Sir Samuel Hoare’s visit to General Franco. Washington’s decision was reached without consultation with Britain, although the British Government was immediately informed of it. ‘‘The Times" points out that the rejection is one of the first positive acts in the United States’ policy townrd Spain, and may have a greater influence in swinging Spain to Allied alignment than Sir Samuel Hoare’s talks with General Franco.
