BERLIN PLASTERED
Heaviest Raid Of War
(Rec. 1 a.m.) LONDON, Aug. 24. The R.A.F. last night gave Berlin its heaviest raid of the war, the attack being described as massive and concentrated. Fifty-eight bombers failed to return. The bombs were delivered in clear weather just before midnight. Great fires broke out, and columns of smoke rose three miles in the air. Allied fighters took a hand, carrying out attacks over a wide area, some even going as far as Hanover.
One pilot on his return said he had been surprised at the lightness of the anti-aircraft fire over Berlin, but this was accounted for by the swarms of night-fighters sent up. “I have never seen so many of them,” he declared, “and soon the bombers were engaged in fierce combats.” The raid was twice as heavy as any previously delivered on Berlin, and it is estimated that between 1800 and 2000 tons of bombs were dropped.
