APPEALS BY BUILDERS

Number Of Cases Heard Armed Forces Board A larger number of appeals in respect, to carpenters and plumbers were heard by the No 108 Armed Forces Appeal Board at Timaru yesterday. Mr K. Mackenzie presided and associated with him were Messrs 8. G. McClelland, J. Cooke and R. S. Gillies (Crown representative and secretary). "The position is no better than it was last year in regard to labour and work to be done and is just as pressing as it was 12 months ago,” said Mr W. A. Petrie, proprietor of the Petrie Construction Company Limited. "There are a few more labourers about,” continued Mr Petrie, "but it is still difficult to get tradesmen.” The Petrie Construction Company appealed in respect to Stuart George Higinbottom, carpenter (Timaru); Harold Edward Tapp, joiner (Timaru); James Sylvester Stevenson, carpenter (Fairlie); Frank Darcy, bricklayer (Timaru); Charles Milton Wellman, painter (Ashburton); Arthur Albert Jones, carpenter (Ashburton); Leslie Hubert Moriarty, carpenter (Ashburton) ; George Raymond Tagg, carpenter (Timaru); Claude Albert Eden, carpenter (Timaru); William Selwyn Stonehouse, carpenter (Timaru). Sine die adjournments were granted in the above cases. In the appeals in respect to John James Dickinson and Leslie Wilson, sine die adjournments were granted, the cases to be reviewed not later than October 31 and every endeavour to be made in the meantime to release them. “Bricklayers are very scarce in South Canterbury and I don’t know of anyone who could take their place,” stated Mr A. Kennedy, builder and contractor, Timaru, in appealing for George Edward Ellem and William Ellem, bricklayers.

Mr Kennedy pointed out that both men were employed at the Timaru Public Hospital. The job had been waiting for them for weeks and the Medical Superintendant (Dr J. C. McKenzie) was anxious that the job be undertaken with all haste, as the bed accommodation at the hospital was very limited.

Both appeals were adjourned sine die subject to direction by the Manpower Officer.

“Killing the Old Men” “We are killing the old men with hard work,” said Mr W. J. Harding builder. Timaru. “I am 70 years of age, and I am employing men of 60 and 65; in fact, most of my employees now are over 50 years of age.” Appeals were lodged by Mr Harding lor Charles Roland Bracefleld. bricklayer (Timaru) and Francis Garfield Latimer, carpenter (Timaru). Sine die adjournments were granted in each ease.

The following appeals lodged by the Timaru Combined Builders' No. 1 Group were adjourned sine die:— Olloff Gordon Johnston, carpenter; Cyril G. Glanville, carpenter (Glenitb; Thomas Arthur Wills, carpenter. (Timaru); Gilbert Duncan, carpenter; Stephen Lancaster, carpenter; George Starsmeare, builder.

Plumbers’ Appeals “We have some big jobs on and the position in our trade is made more acute than ever before. It is a matter of having to sort out the most urgent jobs to be done.” said Mr D. Menzies, of D. and J. Menzies, plumbers, Timaru.

"The plumbers of Timaru are up to their eyes in work and we could comfortably employ an additional two plumbers.” Mr Menzies told the Board that, in addition to their ordinary work, they did the plumbing work in this district for the Canterbury Education Board.

D. and J. Menzies appealed for the following employees and were granted sine die adjournments hi each case:— lan George Menzies, apprentice plumber (Timaru); Robert Begg, plumber (Timaru); Ernest Augustine Laws, plumber (Timaru); Robert Edward Peebles, plumber (Timaru I; William John Stevens, plumber (Timaru).
