COST OF LIVING STATISTICS

Lowest Increase In Dominion (N.Z.P.A.) WELLINGTON, Aug. 24. The Minister of Supply (the Hon. D. G. Sullivan) stated to-day that he had received particulars of the increases in the cost of living in retail figures from the High Commissioner (Mr W. J. Jordan). These confirmed the claim that New Zealand headed the list for the lowest increase in the cost of living during the war, and emphasised the efficiency, and the effectiveness of price control and economic stabilisation policies which had been enforced since the beginning of the war. Mr Jordan’s message stated that the British Ministry of Labour Gazette publishes the following increases in the cost of living percentages since 1939: Per Cent. New Zealand 13.4 Canada 16.7 Australia 22.4 United States 22.6 South Africa 23.5 United Kingdom 29.0 Sweden 42.0 Eire 59.0 Portugal 59.6 India (Bombay) 95.5
