COLD SNAP
Rain And Snow At Week-End PLOUGHING MADE EASIER Winter took a grip of the countryside in South Canterbury at the weekend When a cold rain set in on Saturday evening temperatures dropped sharply and although a little sunshine was seen yesterday, the atmosphere remained iniserably cold. The rain which abated in the early hours of the morning set in again for a short period last night. Snow on the Hunter’s Hills from the previous week-end did not improve the temperature and with the storm on Saturday night (lie hills received another coating of snow. Farmers are unanimous that the rain has been exceptionally beneficial and the cold snap should have no damaging effect. The ground will now respond more readily to the plough. Fleavy Falls Of Snow (N.Z.P.A.) DUNEDIN. June 27. Following a mild winter in Dunedin, there was a sudden change over the week-end to conditions of unusual serevity. and this morning the hills surrounding the city carried a mantle of snow. Rain and sleet showers fell during the day and a strong south-west wind prevailed. Heavy falls of snow ranging un to as much as 18 inches arc reported from Central Otago. where telegraphic communications and the power supply were interrupted in several places.
