SHOCKING TRAGEDY
Woman and Four Children Drowned MURDER AND SUICIDE INDICATED (N.Z.P.A.) INVERCARGILL. June 27. A drowning tragedy, in which a widow and four of her six young children are believed to have lost their lives occurred in the Waihopai River, on the outskirts of Invercargill, on Saturday night. The victims were: Emma 'Mcßae Atkinson Robertson. aged 37. Struan Robertson, aged four. James Robertson, aged five. Nan Robertson, aged three. Graham Robertson, aged two. Mrs Robertson’s husband died 10 months ago. Eariv on Saturday evening, according to the' police. Mrs Robertson took the children for a walk to a nearby bridge and dropped each child into the river, following them herself. The eldest child. Joan Robertson, aged seven, and one of the twin boys. Alister Robertson aged four, were able to scramble ashore, but the others sank immediately or were carried downstream by the fast running current of the flooded river. , . The police recovered the bodies of the mother and Struan by dragging to-day.
