Induction Service
After a vacancy since the Rev. James Baird moved to Christchurch, induction services were held at St. Paul's Church, Highfield, on Friday, when the Rev. lan G. Borrie, M.A., was inducted into the charge. The Moderator of the Presbytery (the Rev. P. Keene) presided, and in the presence of a large assembly, including members of the Timaru Presbytery, inducted Mr Borrie. The sermon was preached by the Rev. D. Mclntyre (St. Andrews) and the address to the minister and the congregation was given by the Rev. A. Begg. High ideals were set and emphasis was laid on the necessity of living up to the high standard envisaged. An adjournment was made to the schoolroom where a social evening was spent, the meeting being presided over by the Rev. A. Begg. Speeches of welcome were given by Mr A. McKirdy on behalf of the congregation, the office-bearers and choir. Mr L. Bush for the young people of the congregation, the Bible Classes, the Sunday Schools and boys’ and girls’ brigades, Mrs R. Hart for the P.W.M.U. and the women of the congregation, Rev. A. L. Silcock (Ministers’ Association), the Rev. L. A. Barnes (Anglican Church, Highfield), the Rev. P. Keene (Presbytery).
Musical items were given by the organist (Mr Woods), an orchestra, Miss Pat Mayo and the choir under the leadership of Mr Winnington.
A message of goodwill was received from the Rev. James Baird. At the service yesterday the churcn was crowded and the new minister spoke in an impressive manner of the necessity of taking Jesus Christ with them in their daily lives and then their lives would be filled with spiritual success. Mr Borrie made a deep impression on the congregation.
