TEMUKA LIGHTING OF OVAL

Cost Of Repairs Request To Football Club A deputation from the Temuka Football Club, consisting of Messrs R. Lyall and E. H. Turner, waited on the Temuka Domain Board at its monthly meeting to discuss the responsibility of the club to regard to repairs to the poles carrying the lighting of the Domain oval. After thanking the council for receiving the deputation, Mr Lyall said that the minutes of the football club showed that the installation of the lighting of the oval was first sponsored by the Businessmen’s Association and a sum of £3O was paid by the Club to the Association for the purpose. Other clubs made use of the lighting and. while the club was prepared to meet a proportion of the expenses, they did not think the club was responsible for the repairs. Mr E. H. Turner considered that the lighting was of benefit to the town generally. He held that the lights were the property of the Domain Board, not of the football club. The Mayor (Mr W. H. McMillan) said that the deputation was correct In saying that the football club was not the prime mover in having the lights installed, but the first suggestion for having the oval lighted came from the club in 1926. The lights were put up by the Businessmen's Association when they were going to hold a band contest and it was considered that they would be of benefit to sports clubs, who all contributed to the original cost. He asked if the club would pay half of the cost, which amounted to approximately £lO. Mr Lyall said that he would not like to commit the club. They were prepared to meet the council, but the club’s finances were not good. Cr. p. H. Lynch said that the poles were of no use to the Borough Council. He would be prepared to move that the poles be removed. Mr Turner said that it would be ' detrimental to both the town and the ! club to have the lights removed, but one light would be sufficient for the club. It was originally to the advantage of both civic and sports bodies to have the lights installed and he hoped it would not be long before they would be needed again. Mr D. B. Andrew asked how many were affected. The Mayor said that the poles for the baths and the bowling green were the concern of the Domain Board. Lighting at the oval had been used by the Athletic and Hockey Clubs as well as , the football club. After the retirement of the deputa- I tion, it was suggested by Cr. J. Gouriey, I that the club should be treated as fairly as possible. He moved that the club be asked to pay a third. The motion was seconded by Cr. D. C. Clark and carried.

Lifting of Cycle Track The report of the visiting committee, presented by Mr D. C. Clark, recommended the lifting of the asphalt cycling track around the oval, except for a small portion in front of the grandstand, and putting it down in grass. The report was adopted, and it was agreed that the Caledonian Society be written to asking its views on the matter. For the Forestry Committee, Mr Lynch reported that his committee recommended the felling of 40 macrocarpa and the planting of young trees in their place. “In connection with rehabilitation,’’ said Mr Lynch, "local industry could be tostered by growing trees in the Domain for pulping. This would help the Domain to be selfsupporting and provide work for rehabilitation. it would be necessary to extend the present tree nursery considerably for this purpose.’’ Hire of Motor Camp There is no reason why they should not have the use of it if they pay for it,” said Mr T. N. Scott when the application of the Timaru Girl Guides for the use of the motor camp building at Easter as being considered. Mr D. C. Clark said that the idea of the camp was that it was for motorists. The Mayor pointed out that the Automobile Association and the Temuka Progress League were also interested. After some discussion, it was moved by Mr Clark, seconded by Mr Lynch, that the application be left in the hands of the Progress League. On being put to the meeting, an amendment by Mr Gourley, that the letting of the building be left in the hands of the curator (Mr A. C. Watson), was carried. The tender of the Oamaru Bowling Club for the purchase of the electric mower at £55 was accepted. Discussion took place on filling the position of Domain Curator in place of Mr Watson, who has been accepted for service with the Air Force, and it was agreed that no action be taken until Mr Watson was called up. PATRIOTIC DANCE The Drill Hall was crowded for the patriotic dance on Thursday night and nearly £4O was taken at the door. Net proceeds will go to the patriotic funds.
