STEAM ROLLER OVERTURNS
VEHICLE OUT OF CONTROL IN STEEP STREET (N.Z.P.A.) DUNEDIN, Jan. 27. A Dunedin City Corporation 15-ton steam roller got but of control in York Place about 4.50 p.m. to-day and capsized at the Intersection of York Place, Stuart and Albert Streets. The only occupant was the driver who died a few minutes after being removed from the overturned vehicle. He was Mr John Smith, a middle-aged man living at 8 Islington Street, North East Valley. The traffic at the time was fairly heavy, including cable cars to Kaikorai, and it was providential that no one else was injured. Eyewitnesses state that the roller got out of control some distance up York Place and that the driver appeared to make an effort to turn into Albert Street which runs uphill, but that an axle broke and the vehicle capsized. They speak highly of the bravery shown by a returned officer, who, at great risk, pulled Smith from the roller from which great quantities of steam were escaping.
