APPEAL DISMISSED
Suspension Of Jockey (N.Z.P.A.) WELLINGTON, Jan. 26. The appeal of H. P. Stewart, an apprentice jockey, against a decision of the Auckland District Committee, has been dismissed by the judges of the New Zealand Racing Conference, but a reduction was made in the length of suspension of Stewart's licence. Stewart’s appeal against this decision of the Auckland District Committee was given on December 28, 1942:—“That the appeal lodged by C. Gomer, stipendiary steward, against the penalty imposed by the Waipa Racing Club on Stewart (a fine of £5) be upheld, and that the penalty be increased by the suspension of Stewart’s jockey licence for the balance of the current racing season.” The judges, after hearing Stewart, Gomer, and counsel for appellant found that Stewart had failed to ride his horse out to the end of the race and did not consider the explanation given by him for so doing sufficient to warrant removing the suspension imposed by the Auckland Committee as they consider him to have been guilty of a gross error of judgment, especially as he was an experieiiced jockey. The judges were of the opinion, however, that the period of suspension imposed by the Auckland Committee too lengthy for such an error and reduced the term to expire on April 30, 1943, instead of July 31, 1943.
