ALLEGED THEFT

Eight Civil Servants Charged (N.Z.P.A.) DUNEDIN, Jan. 25. Eight Government servants, seven of whom are employed by the Army Department and the eighth is in the Public Service, were charged in the Magistrate’s Court to-day with the theft of moneys, the property of the Government. Those charged and the amounts involved were:—Alexander Reid Young, £lB/4/6; Percy Lawrence Dawson, £l/11/6; James William Howard Smith, £l5/1/3; James Rivers. £l5/12/11; John Gerrard Farmer, £9B/0/3; Lewis Norman Grant, £l/4/3;; Eric Rowley Jory, £132/10/11; Jack Bayne Townsend, £23/5/4. On the application of the police all were remanded until Friday on bail of £25 each. The police stated that there would be accompanying charges of forgery. ARMY DEPARTMENT EMPLOYEE REMANDED (N.Z.P.A.) DUNEDIN, Jan. 26. Charged with the theft of £27, the property of the New Zealand Government, John Gavin Mclntyre, employed in the Army Department, appeared before Mr H. W. Bundle, S.M., in the Police Court this morning, and, on the application of Detective-Sergeant Hall, was remanded until Friday. Mr Hall said that the circumstances were similar to those involved in the charges against eight ffien who were before the Court yesterday. Bail was allowed in the sum of £25, with one surety of a similar amount.
