FAIRLIE RELATIONS WITH RUSSIA

ADDRESS BY THE HON. MR BARNARD

There was an attendance of about 50 at the Fairlie Parish Hall on Saturday evening, when the Hon. W. E. Barnard, Speaker of the House of Representatives, gave an address on the functions of the Society for Closer Relations with Russia. Mr Barnard also spoke on the New Zealand war effort.

Mr J. A. Gray, who presided, introduced the speaker and extended a welcome to Mr Barnard. Mr Barnard said that he had come to Fairlie for a quiet holiday, but he found that arrangements had been made for him to give an address. In dealing with closer relations with Russia, Mr Barnard made clear many points regarding life in that country which were of great interest. His remarks regarding the war effort of New Zealand were followed with close interest, and at the conclusion Mr Barnard was accorded a hearty vote of thanks, proposed by Mr K. Campbell and carried by acclamation. On Sunday afternoon Mr Barnard addressed a meeting on the Campaign for Christian Order, but owing to the unfavourable weather the attendance was not large. There was a good attendance at St. Stephen’s Church in the evening when Mr Barnard preached the sermon.
