AIRCRAFT DISASTER
Board Of Inquiry Appointed
(N.Z.P.A.) WELLINGTON, Jan. 21. The Minister of Defence (the Hon. P. Jones) announced that under the authority of the Air Navigation Regulations, 1933, he had appointed a Board of Inquiry to investigate and report on the accident to a twinengined De Havilland Dragonfly of Air Travel (N.Z.) Ltd., which descended on the sea four miles off the shore from Westport on December 21 after losing its starboard propeller. Four passengers lost their lives. Members of the Board are: MtSsrs W. E. Stillwell, S.M., Wellington (chairman), Squadron Leader G. B. Bolt, R.N.Z.A.F., and Squadron Leader R. J. H. Makgill, R.N.Z.A.F., seconded to Tasman Empire Airways Ltd. Under the regulations the Board is charged with the duty of establishing the cause and responsibility for the accident and. where necessary, of making such observations and recommendations from the evidence tendered at. the inquiry as it deems necessary with a view to the preservation of life and avoidance of similar accidents in future.
The members of the Board have been selected in view of their experience and qualifications to deal with any technical evidence which mav be brought before it. The Board will commence its sitting al, Hokitika on January 26.
