TEMUKA TELEGRAMS AND TOLLS
Peak Year In 1942
Last year was a peak year for telephone toll calls put through the Temuka exchange. There was not a large increase over the previous year, but, when compared with 1939, some idea of the increased business being done by the exchange may be formed. In 1939. 54.370 toll calls were put through, and. by 1942, they had increased to 68,174. Strangely enough, the month of December last year showed a decline of 426 calls compared with December. 1941. This was no doubt owing to the cancellation of half rates on Sundays and holidays, which resulted in a reduction of the number of seasonable greeting put through. There was a big increase in telegraph business last year, the number of outward telegrams sent being 7478 compared with 6271 in 1941. The number of inward telegrams received was 8433 in 1942, compared with 6897 in the previous year. BROKEN GLASS A number of complaints have been made recently by cyclists who have had their tyres cut by glass fragments on Temuka streets. Two lots of glass were lying on King Street yesterday. One was a broken milk bottle, which had been dropped on the road, and the other a beer bottle. It is an offence to leave broken glass on the roads, and in these times of tyre shortages, special care should be taken that all glass is removed by those responsible. “If the persons neglecting to do so could be identified by the police.” said Sergeant M. E. Hill, yesterday, “it is exceedingly likely that a prosecution would result.” PERSONAL Mr H. A. Healy who has been transferred from the Post Office Training School at Wellington, has taken up his duties at the Temuka Post Office. Miss P. Talbot, Wellington, is spending a holiday with her parents, Mr and Mrs L. V. Talbot, “Downlands,” Temuka. Mr H. S. Boyle has returned from a visit to Blenheim. Mr and Mrs A. J. Mcßae and family, of Waimate, are the guests of Mr J. W. Halliday. Temuka. Mrs W. Hewson, jr., and family, returned to Little River yesterday.
