GERALDINE APPEAL BOARDS

Protest Against Constitution

R.S.A. Representation Urged

The constitution of Appeal Boards and Primary Production Councils was discussed at a meeting of the Geraldine Returned Services’ Association executive. Dr. L. C. Mail presided.

A report on the manner in which this question was dealt with at the recent conference in Christchurch w f as given by one of the delegates, Mr J. M. Little. He emphasiesd that there was general dissatisfaction among the associations in Canterbury and this extended to South Canterbury. It was felt that there should be greater representation of returned soldiers on these bodies. Mr A. J. Kennedy, the second delegate, also reported on the conference and both delegates were thanked for their reports. The president referred to the deaths on active service of Captain Peter Norris, M.C., and Sergeant Jack Templer, and motions of sympathy were carried. A motion of sympathy was also extended to Mr E. Budd who suffered a bereavement in his family. Correspondence was received from headquarters regarding representatives on Patriotic Welfare Committees, and it was agreed that the R.S.A. was well represented on these committees in this district. Another letter from Headquarters asked for specific cases of grade 3 returned men being placed on leave without pay. The secretary said he had sent forward a report on several cases. An invitation from the Mayor and chairman of the Geraldine County Council for the R.S.A. to parade at the civic reception to be tendered to their Excellencies the Governor-General and Lady Newall, was accepted. Captain J. M. Polhill was appointed to take charge of the parade, and it was agreed to ask members to wear ribbons. PATRIOTIC APPEAL The Geraldine Returned Services’ Association has raised or assisted with raising more than £530 for the “Win the War” Appeal, in addition to providing many of the district convass collectors, reported the president, Dr. L. C. Mail, at a meeting of the executive. A flag day netted £69/5/-, a “Tin Hat” day £lO5/11/-, competitions £5l/18/-, and a gift auction and frolic tin conjunction with the War Workers’ Guild) £3OO. HEALTH STAMP COMMITTEE A number of meetings have been held recently by the Geraldine Health Stamp Committee with the object of assisting the work of the South Canterbury Health Camp Committee in its task of caring for the children at the health camp in Geraldine. Preparations have been made to hold a street day next Wednesday, when badges and health stamps will be sold. BENEFICIAL RAIN Appreciation of the rain received during the last few days was expressed by a number of farmers in the Geraldine district yesterday. A few early Dun oats have been put down by the rain, but it has saved the turnips and rape, particularly those sown on the ridges, and will help to keep the wheat from ripening off too quickly and allow the heads to fill better. The rain has given the lambs a set-back for the time being. The benefit received by rape and other fattening crops will more than make up for the temporary set-back if fine weather is experienced from now on. TOLLS AND TELEGRAMS Both telegrams and toll calls at the Geraldine Post Office showed an increase over last year for the three days preceding Christmas. Toll calls for the three days numbered 600 in 1942 and 596 in 1941. Telegrams totalled 189, compared with 177 in the previous year. PERSONAL Messrs J. G. Grierson and W. Henderson, of the staff of the Geraldine Post Office, are at present on their annual leave.

Mr F. J. Shearer is spending a holiday at Ranfurly. Central Otago.
